The Personnel Department provides Human Resources support to the various departments in Cork City Council to enhance the quality of the Council’s services to the public. This is achieved by recruiting the best staff available, training our staff to highest standards, ensuring the well being of our staff and promoting positive industrial relations throughout the organisation.
The Building Control Department is involved with the administrative and technical process in the enforcement of the statutory building regulations. This Department also has functions concerning dangerous structures, private rented accommodation and safety advice.

Cork City Fire Brigade has seen many changes in it's structure, strength and resources. The development of the Brigade has closely mirrored that of Cork City, its culture being shaped by its experience and tradition. Today we are an organisation of professional people working as part of a team, dedicated to providing a multi skilled approach not alone to the areas of fire fighting, but also to rescue and fire safety engineering. We are available for emergency response to the Community 24 hours a day seven days a week. Hopefully you will never need us, but if you call us we will be there. Our role is changing from response to mitigation, our focus in the future will be to work with the community in the reduction of hazards and prevention of emergency incidents. We will also maintain and enhance our ability to respond to any emergency which may occur.
Civil Defence is a voluntary organisation. Membership is open to male and female personnel with a minimum joining age of 16 years and an upper age limit of 65 years. Civil Defence is divided into a number of different services comprising Rescue, Auxiliary Fire Service, Casualty and Welfare. Training in these units, which are very well equipped, is undertaken on a weekly basis. There is also a River, Lake and Coastal Search and Recovery Unit.
Emergency Planning. The primary aim of emergency planning is to achieve an effective response to all major incidents and emergency situations regardless of their cause.
This scheme promotes cycling by Council employees when travelling to and from work. Employees can purchase cycle to work packs from selected suppliers by agreeing to forego part of their salary to cover the cost of the pack.
The Council, by introducing schemes such as this, is promoting the use of alternative methods of travel to and from work which provide the following benefits:
it promotes the use of other forms of transport to work
it encourages a healthier lifestyle for its employees
it reduces the number of vehicles on the road network
it lowers emissions that may adversely affect the environment

The Personnel Department is organized into four sections:
- Recruitment – who are responsible for recruitment, staff structure and organisation.
- Welfare – who are responsible for the management of the Council’s staff welfare programmes, leave of all types, atypical working schemes.
- Staff Relations – who deal with Union negotiations, implementation and monitoring of agreements, pay and conditions of employment.
- Training – who organise and manage the training function including direct training provision, staff training assistance schemes, on the job training support.
